About Gemstones

Ratti is a traditional Indian unit of gemstone weight. 1 ratti = 0.9144 carats. So a 5 ratti stone weighs approximately 4.57 carats. Both units are used in the trade; we display both on every product.

Carat (ct) is a unit of weight for gemstones: 1 carat = 0.2 grams. Karat (k or kt) is a measure of gold purity: 24 karat is pure gold. They are completely different units. Gemstone weight is always in carats.

Traditionally, only four gemstones were called "precious": diamond, ruby, emerald, and sapphire. All others were called "semi-precious." In Vedic astrology, however, this classification is less relevant. What matters is the planetary association and quality of the stone, not the marketing category.

Heat treatment is used to enhance the colour or clarity of gemstones. "Unheated" means the stone has never been subjected to heat treatment; its colour and clarity are entirely natural. This is the highest quality standard for astrological use and is documented on the certificate.

According to Vedic astrology, some gemstones are compatible and others are not. For example, Ruby (Sun) and Yellow Sapphire (Jupiter) are generally compatible, while Ruby and Blue Sapphire may conflict. This is an astrological question; we recommend consulting your astrologer or using Gemmie for guidance.

Certification

Every stone listed on Jeevan Ratna comes with a report from an independent, third-party gemological laboratory. The lab is not affiliated with us: their report is an independent assessment of the stone's properties, including weight, colour, clarity, origin (where determinable), and treatment status.

Every product page shows the certificate number and the issuing lab. Visit the lab's website, find their certificate verification tool, and enter the number. The full report will appear. If anything differs from what is listed on our site, contact us immediately.

Because a seller certifying their own stones is a conflict of interest. Third-party certification means an independent expert, with their own reputation at stake, has verified the stone's properties. You can trust the certificate because the lab has nothing to gain by overstating the stone's quality.

IGI (International Gemological Institute), IIGJ by GJEPC (Indian Institute of Jewellery by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council), and IGITL (Indian Gemological Institute Testing Laboratory) are nationally and internationally recognised premium certification labs. Every Jeevan Ratna stone already comes with a free third-party lab certificate included. For those who want certification specifically from IGI, IIGJ by GJEPC, or IGITL, it is available as a paid add-on at exactly what these labs charge — we earn no margin on this.

Astrological Questions

Yellow Sapphire is the gemstone of Jupiter (Guru). According to BPHS, it is generally recommended when Jupiter is the lord of an auspicious house in the birth chart, or when strengthening Jupiter is indicated by the current Mahadasha or Antardasha. However, the specific recommendation depends on the individual birth chart. Please use Gemmie or consult your astrologer.

We strongly recommend it for astrological purposes. Your astrologer knows your full chart. Gemmie provides a BPHS-based initial assessment, but your astrologer's recommendation always takes precedence. If you already have a recommendation, we can help you find the right certified stone.

BPHS stands for Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra, the foundational text of Vedic astrology, authored by Maharishi Parashar. It contains the classical rules for gemstone recommendation based on planetary placements, house rulership, and dashas (planetary periods). This is the system Gemmie uses.

According to Vedic astrology, wearing the wrong gemstone can strengthen a malefic planet for your chart, which may have adverse effects. This is why we emphasise consulting your astrologer, and why Gemmie is designed to follow BPHS rules rather than make arbitrary recommendations.

Classical texts recommend a minimum weight for planetary gemstones to be effective. Generally, 2 ratti (approximately 1.83 carats) is considered the minimum, with higher weights often recommended for stronger effects. Your astrologer may specify a minimum weight.

Gemmie

Gemmie asks for your date, time, and place of birth, and your primary concern (career, health, relationships, finances, or peace of mind). It then calculates your planetary positions and strengths using BPHS rules, including Lagna lord, Moon sign, current Mahadasha/Antardasha, and planetary dignities. The result is a gemstone recommendation with a full explanation.

The recommendation logic is not AI: it is BPHS logic coded by our team of astrology and gemstone experts. AI is used only to present the result clearly in your preferred language (English, Hindi, or Hinglish). The actual recommendation follows classical rules, not machine learning.
